AUS vs IND – Shubman Gill suffers injury scare a week before Perth Test

Doubts over India’s batting order for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth grew after Shubman Gill injured his left thumb on the second day of India’s intra-national training match at the WACA.

He was injured while playing wedges and left the field and never returned. It was not possible to confirm whether the injury will affect Gill’s selection for the first Test, which begins on November 22 at Optus Stadium in Perth.

Gill is in third place, but has also been touted as an option for the opening spot alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, in case Rohit Sharma is not available for the first Test due to the birth of his second child.

It was also learned that Devdutt Padikkalwho was part of the India A group in Australia, will remain in the Test squad*. It was not possible to confirm, however, whether Padikkal will be part of the main squad or the reserves.

Rohit Sharma welcomes second son but not yet confirmed to play for Perth

While awaiting a proper assessment of Gill’s injury, the Indian camp received the good news that Rohit’s wife Ritika Sajdeh gave birth to their second child on Friday. With the deadline coming up for the Perth Test, Rohit informed the BCCI and selectors that he might not be available for the series opener.

After India’s 3-0 defeat against New Zealand recently, Rohit reportedly considered traveling to Australia to train with the team and return for the birth of his son.

It remains unclear whether he will travel to Perth in time to be available for the first Test.

Another opening option, KL Rahulhad left the field on the first day of the simulation game after being hit in the elbow for a short ball. He did not appear to bat later in the day as India’s top batsmen pulled off another upset. Rahul also did not enter the field on Saturday.

Gill, who batted twice on Friday, made 28 in his first attempt before being caught at gully off a delivery by Navdeep Saini. He made an unbeaten 42 upon returning to the field.
