The ICC Council will meet next week for an emergency meeting to discuss the fate of the 2025 Champions Trophy. ESPNcricinfo understands that the single-point agenda of the meeting, which is likely to be held on November 26, is to reach to a consensus on whether a hybrid model should be adopted for the tournament, with matches being distributed between host country Pakistan and a second overseas venue, which has not yet been confirmed.
While several people familiar with the discussions confirmed the development to ESPNcricinfo, an ICC spokesperson said there has been no official communication confirming the meeting next week. It is unclear how many councils have been informed of the meeting at this time. A PCB official also said they had not received such information at the moment.
The ICC Council is made up of representatives from the 12 full member countries, three member representatives, an independent director along with the ICC President and CEO.
The impasse has meant that with less than 100 days to go until the scheduled start of the tournament – as hosts, the PCB planned it to be from February 19 to March 9 – there is still no official ICC schedule for the event.
This is the second time in consecutive years that the PCB has been faced with the hybrid model to host a multinational tournament to accommodate India. The 2023 Asia Cup was played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka after the Indian team was allowed to travel to Pakistan. It was Pakistan who traveled between their country and Sri Lanka, where the final of the tournament was played. Pakistan traveled to India for the ODI World Cup shortly after the tournament, a decision the PCB said it hoped would be reciprocated by the Champions Trophy.
